Eddie W. Caughfield

April 4, 1918 ~ July 21, 2018 (age 100)

Edwin William “EW” Caughfield died Saturday, July 21, 2018 in Merritt Island, Florida.  On April 4, 2018 he celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.  He often remarked that he had lived from horse and buggy days to seeing a man land on the moon.    He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed those activities with his family and close friends. His faith always guided him and he enjoyed worshiping at Calvary Baptist Church.

“EW” was born in Somerset, Texas on April 4, 1918 to parents Floyd Caughfield and Emma Lou Akers. He was raised by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Maddie Caughfield.

“EW” graduated from Texas A&I College in Kingsville, Texas in 1940 with a degree in Physics.  He taught school and coached football for a short time – then began his farming and ranching career in South Texas.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen for over 50 years, serving two terms as Chairman of the Board of Directors.

He is survived by his son, Roy Edwin Caughfield and daughter-in-law, Penny Caughfield of Merritt Island, Florida; daughter, Kathleen Back and son-in-law, Kenneth Back of Lafayette, Louisiana. He has five grandchildren, Karen Overnann and husband, James of Houston Texas; Christy Janitch and husband, Mike of DePere, Wisconsin; Becky Kuehn of Quincy, MA; Martin Back and wife, Lindsey of Denton, TX; and Andy Caughfield of Orlando, FL. “EW” had seven great grandchildren, Matthew, Micah, Lydia, Lauren Overmann of Houston, TX; Gabe, Hunter, and Luke Janitch of DePere, WI.

“EW” is preceded in death by his wife, Arvie Marie Jones – 2014 and daughter, Arvie Jeanne Kuehn – 1997.

Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Friday, July 27, 2018 form 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with entombment at Mont Meta Mausoleum in San Benito.
